Safe at Home 1.0

Overview

The Safe at Home 1.0 Program is funded by the DACL and is focused on reducing fall risk by providing individuals with equipment and home modifications designed to make everyday activities easier and safer. Examples include items such as railings, stairlifts, grab bars, and shower chairs. Each item is recommended according to various factors such as the individual’s mobility and home environment, so items may vary according to different needs.  See below for more information, or watch this video to learn more about the process.

Safe at Home Process

Once an individual has completed the application, they will undergo an assessment by an occupational therapist to determine recommendations for modifications. Once a plan has been made, a contractor will be assigned to set up and install the items. Please note, both renters and homeowners may apply for the program.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Q. Do I have to pay for these items?

A. No, Safe at Home is a grant funded program, provided at no cost to eligible participants, up to the maximum allowable budget as set by DACL.

Q. When will I be called/scheduled?

A. It depends. Intake and applications occur on a rolling basis, and timing can vary based on funding resources, number of applicants, and other considerations. Once an individual has submitted all of the required application information, they will added to the scheduling list and will be contacted when it is their turn to be assessed.

Q. Can I go through the program if I am a renter?

A. Yes, renters are eligible for equipment items; additionally, if approval is obtained from the homeowner/property management, Safe at Home is able to install items. Renters are still responsible for following any lease agreements.

Q. My family member also lives here. Can we both be assessed at the same time?

A. Each application is by individual. Each person will have to apply separately so they can be assessed according to their own needs.

Q. I already went through Safe at Home. Can I apply again?

A. Each individual may go through the Safe at Home Program twice. However, there are also qualifications to initiate a second application. Please call (202) 559 9954 to determine if you qualify.

Q. Can Safe at Home install items that I already bought myself?

A. No, due to liability reasons, Safe at Home can only install items that the program provides. Safe at Home does not reimburse for items a client has privately purchased.

Q. Can I combine my own money with Safe at Home funding to get larger/more items?

A. No, the budgets are set by DACL and cannot be combined with personal money. If a client wishes to do more beyond what Safe at Home can offer, they would have to privately pay for their own work.
